For all you adrenaline junkies, the Fred Whitton Challenge has attracted cyclists from round the world for over 30 years. Those brave enough or crazy enough to enter tackle its grueling 112-mile course - which includes the notorious Hardknott and Wrynose Passes. Now one of the most popular cycle events in Europe, at the time of writing participants have raised over £2M for charities including MacMillan Cancer Support and Great North Air Ambulance. Their next event is 12 May 2024, entry is by ballot only.
